I do not disagree with the opinion below one bit! But here's an article or two to help you know a few questions to ask, a few things to check, a few pointers in addition to a knowledgeable friend.

You need to take along a friend who knows a thing or two about motorcycles and what needs to be operating correctly. There ARE good people left in this world, but unfortunately they are few and far between. Even if we detailed everything out for you, you still wouldn't be able to check it over to the point where you knew you were getting a good deal and NOT getting screwed over. I'm sure you have at least one friend who rides who'd be more than willing to help you out. Just ask around, maybe a girlfriend's husband or boyfriend. I've pimped my very knowledgeable boyfriend out to girlfriends so they could get some expert advice and assistance in a purchase. Just be careful you don't get scammed.
