I can't see!

by Mickey

O.K. My vision is terrible. I wear glasses - trifocals (progressives if your PC) - at age 44! Lately, I have to take my glasses off and put on reading glasses to read. My vision at night is even worse. I get glare off my visor at night and cannot see where I am going and have to lift the visor. Not good on the highway and with my regular everyday glasses on - I have gotten dust in my eyes often.

When I ride, I find that I have to carry a multitude of eye wear for various conditions. Contacts and regular goggles won't work because my vision is poor particularly at night with them in (I can't see if there are deer or bears standing on the side of the road!). Sometimes I wear a full helmet with a full face visor and other times I wear a half helmet.

My question is. I need to skinny down my eye-wear. I need a really good pair of prescription riding goggles that will darken enough for sunny days, work just as well at night, keep the wind out of my eyes and have a good peripherial view. They also need to work with both helmets. I would like a polarized pair, however, I get a moire pattern with the visor on my full helmet because it too is polarized. I am sure I am not the only one with this problem. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

There is a line of riding glasses by PanOptx (now known as 7eye) that does prescription lenses. You can have them do progressives with Transition lenses that darken/lighten per the lighting conditions. I recently purchased a pair of these riding glasses and love them. They're a little pricey but well worth the $$. Check out their website.

1. Don't ride at night - ever! My husband and I have pretty good vision and we choose never to ride at night. There are just too many things you can't see at night - bears, deer, dogs, potholes, debris on the road, etc.

2. Always wear a full-face helmet - for protection from wind, bugs, rocks, dust, etc. We bought Scorpion helmets that have a clear visor plus a drop-down (inside) sun visor. They work great on sunny days (drop down the sun visor with a flick of a switch) and darker days (put the sun visor up).

My suggestion: wear whatever glasses or contacts give you the clearest vision - especially distance vision. Then either get a helmet like our Scorpions or a good pair of sun glasses to wear under your FULL-FACE helmet.

In my opinion, it is just plan dangerous to wear anything but a full-face helmet for the reasons you stated and the reasons I stated above.
