I Can't Get Into First Gear

by Jess
(Miami, Fl)

My cousin gave me a Yamaha FZR 1998 and sure today was my second day practicing but still I can't get the bike moving. It's so hard for me to get into first gear, all I do is make the bike stall out and I dropped it twice in doing so. Any advice?!?!?!?!

Self Help is an oxyMORON

Ok, if you knew how to ride you wouldn't be teaching yourself. My best advice is to take a motorcycle training course. The MSF is national organization dedicated to teaching. here's the link MSF USA.

I learned how to drive a bike from my husband. That is.....the how to make it go stuff. I really learned to ride at the 2 day course. Riding is different than driving.....you need the confidence that can only be gained by experience. No worries about hurting yourself, the bike or your pride.

If your in a hurry-- make sure you and the bike are on a level surface. Check the choke to be sure your getting enough gas to keep the idle up. You shouldn't use the gas at all yet. A nice slow release of the clutch is all you need to make it go. If you get a bit scared just squeeze the clutch back in and you'll slow but not stall. Good luck- I'll look for you on the road soon!

Relax

You are trying to hard. Slow down. Instead of trying to take off.. learn your clutch. See if you can find what I call the "happy spot", that one spot where you can actually make your bike rock back and forth simply by squeezing the clutch just a bit. First learn where that is. You don't want to let go all of a sudden..ease in to it. Inch your way around a parking lot until you find that spot and how much gas is needed to make it inch a bit. Then slowly release while applying a little more gas.. and YOU'RE OFF~!~! Main thing.. relax..you can do this~!~

First Gear

First take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are having fun. Don't get so frustrated and it will come to you. As with everything else it just takes practice. It will happen.
