How to Start a K1100 BMW

How stupid is that! I am thinking there must be a secret to this, have power, fuel pump working, stand up, in neutral, brake/s on, tried various combos and no go, wondering if there is a kill switch on her, engine just not doing anything.

How to Start

If it is like my bike, you have to hold the clutch in even if it is in neutral. Try simple first is always my motto and good luck. Let us know what works.

Thanks for that, still no luck so it could have an electrical problem, I am just trying to rule out the obvious, battery has plenty of power, its a 1992 model, I have it on ebay at the moment and really wanted to hear it running before I sold it, even though it is an as is auction I'd feel better knowing if it was running at least! It has a three position dial type switch with a green button in the middle on the right handle bar,with the dial in the middle position the fuel pump kicks in, but stops in the third or first position, pressing green button with fuel pump running is doing nothing extra. I'll just play around some more, it would be so much easier if it was 200kg lighter! ;)

Kill Switch

Hi there, possibly is a kill switch. Usually red button on right hand handlebar. You don't say what year the bike is, but they have all had kill switches for many years.

Alternatively, it possibly has a "safety switch" to prevent the bike from starting when the side stand is down. Sometimes these get stuck or bent and cut the engine off. WD 40 might work, or just check that the switch is not stuck out when the stand is returned to riding position. You might need to jiggle it a bit or bend the contacts between the stand and the switch to get it right.

Have you checked the battery terminals are secure and that the battery is charged?
