How much engine?

by John
(Florida)

Finances required me to sell my car. I bought a 79cc scooter and LOVE it! But I need to interstate about 25 miles to visit my beautiful grandkids. How much engine should I be shopping for to haul my 250 pound hairy butt? Thanks for your input.

650 - 900 range?

I know; that may seem like a LOT of bike compared to what you are riding...but interstate? Big trucks, higher speeds, frequent lane changing...all of these factors will require you to be on a bike with the instant power when necessary to scoot out of the way. Semis and other bigger vehicles will tend to "push" you around when passing you just by the air displacement of their size - kind of like jumping the wake behind a boat - and the heavier your bike is, the better handling you will have. Bigger bike takes up more space as well, increasing your visibility just a little bit. I read somewhere that the BEST thing you can do to increase your visibility is to drive a bike w/a front faring, as it adds width to your ride.

My first bike is 800 cc and around 600 pounds - it's totally manageable for a lady, but you will want to spend some time getting used to that bigger bike before ever hitting the superslabs with it.

Enjoy! I envy your freedom!! :)

I'd get at least a 650cc motorcycle.
