Honda Shadow 750

My husband and I are learning to ride together. This all came about when his brother (16) bought a Honda Shadow 750. We decided to take over payments being that he no longer wanted it. I am only 5' 2" and 100 lbs. We are signed up for the endorsement class and will be taking it on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. We drove it around the back yard briefly. I just am not sure if it is the right bike for me. It feels really heavy. Everyone tells me it is because it's my first time ever being on one is that true? I don't have the option of getting a different bike as we can not afford an other one at this time, and when we do get another one my husband wants to get a bigger bike. I was also told if I get a smaller bike I will outgrow it quickly. Help I am really nervous about riding this bike. Also I live on a dirt road and will have to drive down it to get on a paved road.
