Hills

by Angelia Blasier

I'm having some troubles starting out on hills. My hands are small so to hold the brake, clutch and give it gas all at the same time is a little hard. Any suggestions?

Starting On Hills

If you are having trouble articulating the clutch/throttle/front brake then stop and throw the weight of the bike so as to be balanced on the left foot. Then you will be able to hold the bike with the rear brake. This frees up the throttle and clutch and makes a start on a hill so much less of a problem. The only down side of this manner is you will be holding the clutch during a stop light, if applicable. I hope this helps. Ride On.

Friction Point
by: Helen Wheels

Use your back brake, roll onto the throttle about two hundred rpm more that you would normally use to start your bike rolling and let out the clutch until your engine sound and rpms roll back to half of what you normally hear and see. Let off the back brake slowly and give it more gas and keep letting out the clutch when you start moving. This is called the friction point.

Takes some practice but you will become more confident the more you do it.

Same Problem

Yes I think everyone has that problem so don't feel so bad. I have found that if I use my clutch just slightly so that it tries to roll just a bit then ease in on it some I don't really have to hold my brake and when I'm ready to leave my stop then I can give it some gas with the throttle and ease out slowly on the clutch a little at a time. Not sure if you understand what I'm saying, but it works for me. It is like in your safety class they have you dog walk the bike a lot. I guess that is where I picked up on this. Ease out on the clutch just until it wants to go forward, but not so much that the bike actually moves. This will only work if you are on an uphill slope. As for a downhill stop you just have to hold everything and then when time to go just ease out to a roll then let off the brake and go. Actually a bit easier.

Stuck On a Hill

I have the same problem and I do the same thing. If I have to stop on a hill, I use the rear brake to hold the bike. When it's time to leave my position, I slip the clutch, roll the throttle and ease off the rear break (don't do it too quickly) at the same time to leave my position.

Rear Brake
by: Anonymous

I try to use the rear brake to hold my position while easing out on the clutch and rolling on the throttle. To me, using the rear brake when starting out on a hill is easier than trying to use the front brake and throttle at the same time.
