Helmet Questions

by Susan
(Cambodia)

Hi,

I will be riding a moto taxi in a third world country to get from here. On a day filled with errands, I'll need to put the helmet on and off 10 or 20 times a day. And some of those destinations I'll need to show up looking good--like a wedding, a workshop I'm teaching, or a meeting. I've got skin cancer issues, so the helmet has to be UV protective. And of course, it is 8000 degrees with 130 % humidity, always.

It makes me depressed just thinking about it. In previous years, I used to wear a half helmet which was not so hot, but the roads are getting more crowded and the skin cancer became an issue, so now I feel like I should get a full face model.

OK, enough griping. My questions. Are all face shields UV protective? I have been surfing for a while now but I can't tell. Sometimes there is no mention.

And (I know I think I am asking for the moon here) do any helmets allow for a small hairbow inside the helmet. I have long hair but the front top hair is growing shorter these days (age, I guess) and if I don't pull it back, it is in my eyes all day. I know I can't do a monster clip but a flat barrette in the center back would be nice.

I'd also like the padding to not be so long at the neck to interfere with a hair bun at the nape.

Do you have any recommendations on what brands or styles I might look at?

Just wondering.

Susan

...surprisingly, most face shields are NOT UV-protective.
An exception is Shoei. I would also recommend good vents and a silky scarf...I like their modular helmet, but it'll cost you. The cheaper modulars have inferior chin hinges and absolutely no UV protection.

It comes in different colors also. Shiny black, flat black, silver, red and blue. I really think this helmet will be what you need.

Helmet Help

I would suggest go to LeatherUp.com and get a Hawk Silver Dual Visor Open Face Motorcycle Helmet (Item: #AP-80-Silver). The cost is only $69.95 plus shipping. I have one of these I usually wear in the winter, but on occasion I wear in the summer also here in the heat of Texas. I like it because the back of it comes up high enough that you can turn your head easily and I pull my hair back at my neck and it doesn't bother me wearing this helmet. Another feature is a dual visor. It has the clear visor that comes down over your entire face, but also if needed it has a tinted visor you can bring down out of the helmet even as you are riding with a slide button on top of the helmet. It is great when you turn towards the sun and you can just slide it down to block the bright sun. It also lets airflow up to your face so you don't smother, but not too much. I can even wear my contacts and wear this helmet with no goggles. I have been very pleased with this helmet as well as my husband like his also. Go check it out! Plus it is cost friendly. Leather Up.com also has jackets and rainsuits that are great buys too!
