Handlebar Reach

by Nancy
(Blanchard, ID, USA)

I have a Yamaha 650 Classic. I am new female rider. I am looking for handlebars that will bring the grips closer to me so I am not reaching to grab the brake and clutch. I have already had a minor mishap while reaching for the brake and pushed the throttle instead. It was not pretty.

Do you have any recommendations for handlebars or other suggestions?

Pullback Risers
by: Robin C

I have a V-Star 650 Classic, and being on the short side I was really reaching also. I rode it that way all year last year, and this spring I installed some pullback risers. I bought a set by Aeromach that pull the bars back 2" and up 1". What a world of difference! It has seriously improved my riding and control skills as I am now in the proper position on my bike. Cornering is much easier and more relaxed for me (although it felt weird at first, like my hands were in the wrong place on the bike), and I am no longer leaning forward and really reaching for the brake and clutch. Risers are also a much easier change than new handlebars, and you don't have to pull off all of your controls and start over! Pro One and Baron make some sets, and Yamaha Star brand are also available. Best upgrade out of many on my Classic :)

Risers

I was lucky enough to buy my used VStar 1100 from a short man. He had risers already on the bars which solved my short arm problem. (I'm only 5' 1") They come in all lengths and a mechanic might have to lengthen your cables to accommodate. It beats having to buy new handlebars.

Handlebars

I had a mishap this morning riding to work. Dropped my bike at a stop sign, I put liners in my gloves and couldn't grasp the brake very good, felt embarrassed but picked up my bike ok by myself and got on my way. But being comfortable sure helps. Most bike shops will let you try out handlebars that fit you.

I have pull back risers from Scootworks on my 900 Vulcan LT. They made a world of difference.
