Got My License!

by Bridgett
(Roseville, CA)

Well, I went yesterday and took my test and I got my license! NOW, I just need to find a bike. I think I may have found one, it is an 2005 883 Sportster. I have researched and vacillated till my head hurt. I thought about buying a 250 Rebel to start, but I think I am going to go with a bike I can ride for a long time and will be happy with. This bike is a gals first bike, she put 1800 miles on it and got pregnant, and is now pregnant with her second baby so it looks like she will have her hands full, thought it best to sell the bike. Getting a good deal. I am going to have a safety check performed by Harley before I commit.

Question I have for any ladies with a Harley, I also have an opportunity to get a 1200 Sportster for a great price. Though the body size is the same, the motor is stronger. I am concerned it might be to much for my first bike, but I have been told that it is the same seat height and weight as the 883, so I am not sure if I should just go for it? Hmmm, so many decisions. Thanks for listening! Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

That is interesting info.

How is the seat on the Deluxe for you? Did you swap it out? I like the way the Deluxe feels, but the seat is SO Wide! It presses to much on my thighs. I would need to switch it out.

I feel some of the sam issues with the Sportster. Though I feel like my bike "fits" me. I have never ridden another bike, this is my first. I need to go out and demo a few. Maybe next year. I am having surgery soon so I will be out of commission for awhile. When next riding season comes, I really want to do some longer trips. I road 250 miles on my Sportster and was so beat up, I could barely walk when I was done. It was the bike BUT it was also me, white knuckling it most of the way home (the ride to the destination was good, I was fresh). I just was not familiar with our path and was more nervous than the other more experienced riders, so I wore out quicker.
Will keep you posted!

Softail vs. Sportster
by: Pam

Hi Bridgett,

I never felt comfortable on long rides or high speeds on my Sportster. Because the Softail Deluxe has a lower seat height and lower center of gravity, it just rides better for me. I went back and forth between the Dyna low rider and the Softail Deluxe and the deluxe is just a more comfortable, smoother ride. I recommend demoing both bikes and more than once. I went to our Harley dealer and rode a couple different times. We just got back from a weekend ride and put 400 miles on! I absolutely love my bike! Good luck! P.S. your husband won't feel the fatigue on your bike unless he takes it on a long ride!

Fun to read

this comment 6 months later. I bought the Sportster 883. I love my bike. Funny, I have drooled over the Deluxe! Not sure what bike I will get when I upgrade (and I will)maybe a Low Rider. But I took my Sportster on a long trip and fatigue was an issue. I'm sure for several reasons, not just the bike.

I feel the bike is top heavy and am having trouble turning (tight turns), I asked my hubby to hop on mine (he rides a Heritage, cruiser) and see if he finds it harder to turn. He rode that sucker around the lot like it was a mini bike, weaved, circles as tight as could be! I was amazed. He says my bike is very nimble and easy to maneuver. Now, I have to admit I just have a block to turning, I feel the top heaviness and always feel as if I am going to drop it in a turn! I can't imagine going up to a bigger bike until I master this one! How was it for you ladies that right up to a bigger bike?

Haylee and Bridget
by: Pam

I rode when I was in high school and then just started back in Feb 09. I took the class, got my license and bought an 07 Sportster 1200 Low. Only kept it a month because it was too top heavy on the interstate -- I live in Atlanta. Traded it in on a 2009 HD Softail Deluxe and totally love it. I'm small -- only 5'2" and 110 lbs, but I handle it better than the Sportster. I've put 450 miles on it in 2 weeks.

Sport to Cruiser
by: Haylee

I started riding @46 last year. I took the class, bought my bike,09HD 1200 Sportster. Loved riding it but it was a rougher ride. Fatigue become a problem for me. After putting it in storage for the winter I did a lot of thinking. So in February I took a major step...traded the sporty for a 09HD Softail deluxe! I have ridden it twice now. I love it & no regrets. Very comfy, smooth and power when I need it. Good luck & ride safe.
