I started getting up & out early on weekends to get more experience with the highway driving and becoming more familiar with the roads. I would even take the car (or truck) on test journeys so I could see the hazards and rough road patches and all before following the same path on my bike, kind of like military "recon". This helped me be better prepared and familiar with the highway path I would later take on my bike. This helped me hope it does you...

Generally Scared of Highway
by: Anonymous

I am a male rider who came back to the sport after 30 years. While 120mph was fun when I was young, 55 suits me fine now. I started riding on a secondary road that was repaved just last year. This road leads to the river where I fish and hunt, so I have been traveling it for 40 years. It has several sweeping curves and little traffic during the weekdays. Even though I know it intimately, rains sometimes washes sand or gravel out onto the pavement. I rode it almost every day for 3 weeks until I was comfortable with shifting and braking again. Speed varied from 45 to a very fast 60 on a 1/2 mile straight with no houses. But watch for animals. One day I hit the four lane and rode at 65 for about 20 minutes. I passed slower traffic by signaling with my blinkers and my arm. (not always recommended, but I don't trust cars seeing my rear blinkers.) Had a blast, but constantly monitored my mirrors. I discourage tailgaters buy slowing gently until they pass. Don't be afraid. Be cautious. Be safe. Have fun.

Some Fear is Good
by: Lizz1958

Sometimes fear makes us more careful, so don't discount your fear. Find a nice parking lot and practice practice practice. Take short trips daily, to the local store for a soda, or to pay a bill around town. Every good outing builds confidence. Pretty soon, you will be everywhere. Oh, one of the things I did was get up early on a Sunday morning, when folks are still asleep, and ride a highway that has minimal traffic. Once you get that 1st time out of the way, you will feel better.

Hope this helps some.Good luck.
