Front Motorbike Tyre

by Steven Hay

I can buy an old model 130/60/17 front motorbike tyre which is now old stock. It says these were replaced by the new size 120/60/17. Is this correct. Thanks

You can get a 130-70-17 if your mudguard has the space to take the extra height of the 70 side wall.

160/80/16 or whatever.
First number = tire width
Second number = tire height
Third number = rim size - you can't deviate from this.

The thing about height and width is will they fit into your bike frame?

Too wide and the tyre may rub against the swing arm. Even if it "just fits" in. When cornering the tyre distorts and may rub against the frame. Not a good look, possibly dangerous.

Cheers,

Linda

PS "old" tyre might be past it's recommended use by date, which I believe can also adversely affect performance. Not something you might want for a motorcycle tyre.
