Front Brakes

by Larry
(Kentucky)

My Harley Heritage (2008)has a problem with the brake light staying on after applying the front brakes. I can push the handle forward and it will go off. I lubricated it very good and it worked for a few times and then came back on again. I don't know what the problem might be. I talked to them at the dealership and they said bring it in and they will check it. $70 an hour is to much to pay if it is something I can fix. Please help

Master Cylinder

Had that problem with my low rider and it was the return spring / cylinder in the master cylinder. I rebuilt it and no more problems!

Brake Issues
by: Barbara

Hi,

Checking the brake-light contacts should be easy, and if they are corroded, that might cause your problem, however...if you lubed the brake lever and the problem went away for a little while, that might indicate that the problem is mechanical rather than electrical.

Does your front brake fully release? Can you jack up the bike, or brace it up so the front wheel rolls freely, and spin it, then use the front brake and see if it completely releases? Perhaps there is something like some corrosion in the master or slave cylinder which prevents it from completely opening/closing. Years ago I disconnected the front brake light from my front brake on my sidecar bike, because the State Patrol was watching for brake lights, and I wanted to be able to slow down without showing a stop-light. Not really a good idea, and my other bikes have functional brake-lights. They are sensitive, and perhaps you can adjust the activator so that the light goes off when it should.

Keep us posted, OK?

Electrical?
by: Linda in Oz

It is maybe an electrical problem with the switch (contacts) rather than mechanical with the brake lever.

Cheers

Warranted Part

If you bought your bike new from the dealer is should be warranted. Check with Harley Davidson about that. Another thing to think about is be sure that you are not covering your front brake with your fingers while riding. I rode from Colorado to Utah with this guy whose brake lights were on the majority of the time we rode. I watched him while we rode and noticed that he always had his fingers over the front brake lever, I mentioned it to him and he said that he always covers the front brake just in case. I told him that I wondered if it was possible that he had a little presser on the front brakes at all times, he said it was possible. Rode with him after that trip, I did not see his brake lights on the whole ride. Guess he might be paying more attention to if he is applying presser to the brake lever.
