first time rider

by Heather
(Ohio)

I am a new rider that is looking for a great beginner bike. I have been saving money for a year and would like something that I won't regret or outgrow too fast. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on what NOT to do? Thanks, Heather

Congrats for choosing a great hobby. Safety first, always. I like the LS650 Suzuki Savage. It is belt drive, sits 27 inches at the seat, and has a single cylinder with a carburetor. Old school but reliable. $2000 will get you a good one to practice with here in the Southeast. If you drop this one, as everyone does while learning, the 352 lbs can be picked up, and you will not cry all the way home because it's scratched. I know the Honda Rebel is popular, but it is a little underpowered for highway use.

The big piston on the LS650 causes a little buzz, but you can learn on it and sell it for what you gave for it and move up when you feel comfortable. The Suzuki is good for ME. It may not suit you. Do your research and make up your own mind. Everyone thinks they have the best bike, but I think you should make an informed decision on your own. I have no agenda other than your fun and safety. Motorcycles are great, but the words "Officer, I just didn't see her" are repeated often in this sport. Happy riding.

Research & Try Different Styles
by: gina

I just bought my bike bike May 2008, I can honestly say I went to buy my first bike with little know how or knowledge. I did search of the bike I looked at Honda Rebel found that many other owners reviewed the bike well and I did have a experienced rider with me. I did buy from dealer but if you are able to buy from private owner than you may find more bike available. I would suggest to go to events and shop till you find the bike that best suites you. Also remember that you will fall - drop your first bike, so keep in mind that you may want something that you will not mind having a few scrapes with. Lets know what you decide on.
Happy riding .

Do Your Homework
by: Rumble_mommy

Dear first time rider,

I got my first bike this year as well. I ended up with a completely different bike than I originally wanted, but it's worked out great. My advice is to sit on a LOT of bikes. If you're short like me (only 5'2"), look for a bike with a low seat height or one that can be lowered. A lot of women start out with a Ninja 250 or EX500, which are awesome bikes. Some people will discourage you from these, because you'll outgrow them in a year or two. That's true, but you'll probably have an easier time learning, and they have a great resale value. And if you buy used, you won't feel so bad when you drop your bike! I started on a CBR600. I love it now, but the first 500 miles were really tough, and I dropped it 5 times! Bottom line...do your homework and listen to your instincts. Happy riding!
