Eye Vibration?

by Kate
(Battle Creek)

I'm a newbie rider this year, have my own bike, observe all forms of safety, even forsaking the "coolness factor". However, if I go past 45 miles an hour or so, I notice "eye vibration". I wear prescription glasses and would never take them off, but it's certainly not safe. Does anyone else have this problem? I tried using the pinchy things that tighten your glasses to your head, but there is still some movement in my glasses. I really feel unsafe with everything moving around as it does. Would Rx sport glasses help? They're so expensive, would like an easy fix if there is one. Can't believe I would get used to this.

Helmet Buffeting
by: Anonymous

I'm familiar with this but only after test riding a bike w/ a windshield. Do you use one by any chance Kate b/c typically the buffeting occurs if the windshield is not the proper height for you. What happens is instead of the air being directed up over your head, it is hitting lower most likely in your forehead area and thus as it tries to work it's way around your head the friction is causing the buffeting. Try a taller windshield or none at all.

Helmet Buffeting?
by: Kate

I've been doing a bit of web surfing. I think I have a name for my problem: Helmet buffeting. Is this familiar to anyone? Couldn't find any tried and true solutions to this problem though. I hate to change from a full-face helmet. Just doesn't seem like a good idea as a new rider.

Rx made for bikers.
by: Sandra

My last eye appt, dr. shared w/me that he wanted to do some sort of public awareness seminar regarding a style of prescription glasses made especially for motorcycle enthusiasts...something I had not considered, as my Rx glasses stay on fine under my face shield, and I have not YET noticed trouble when riding w/o my shield.

Something to check into.

Tried that...

Thanks for the advice gals...much appreciated! I can't wear contacts and I am wearing a full face helmet with shield. I may go to my local bike shop and see if my helmet is too loose, and if it's not, talk to my optometrist about what my options are. I'm not giving up, just going to take it slow until I come up with a safe solution. Still looking for any other suggestions out there. Happy riding!

Yes, its the wind.

I wear contacts, but I once wore my glasses due to an eye infection, and I experienced the very same thing, so I do understand what you see talking about. When I went back to my contacts it went away. I have a half-shell helmet for summer riding in Texas, and a full helmet with a face shield for the winter time. I wore my glasses with the face shield and the vibration stopped. I would also suggest a full helmet with a face shield to help with the wind on your glasses OR change to wearing contacts.

Eyewear

Try a pair of goggles over your glasses or a helmet with a face shield. Could be the wind, not the bike vibrations, that is shaking your glasses.
