Engine Stalling at High Speeds

So, I took my little Honda Rebel out on the freeway for the first time today....everything was cool at first, I hit 50-60mph and felt pretty comfortable. I even got up to about 70mph...then I lost power and the throttle didn't work, it just stalled out. I had to pull off to the side of the road and put the choke on to start it up again. It then stalled out on me two more times before I could get off the freeway. What the hell happened?? Is it the carburetor? Did it over heat? I just had the carburetor cleaned and tuned last month. Has anyone had this same problem?

Petcock?
by: An answer?

I have an old Shadow 500 and the fuel petcock has an internal spring that can shutdown fuel if the engine vacuum is too low. That can happen if the carbs aren't tight to the engine or if an internal spring in the petcock weakens. Most people who experience the problem do so only when running at high rpm for some time, quite often after carb work. The stalling reports sound exactly like your description.

Sooooo, you might want to go to a Honda repair shop and have them check the vacuum. If it is OK (read: the carbs were seated correctly when the work was done) then try to install a rebuild kit for the fuel shutoff petcock.

There is a cool youtube video of a guy running his Rebel down the freeway ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFWfh8t3cZc ) with no evidence of any problems. He toped out around 85 mph, so the bike can do the job. Hope this helps.

Back from the Shop
by: Anonymous

Took it into a local Honda dealer and they said they drove it around on the freeway for 3-5 miles with no problems. They tried to tell me I might have been low on gas. So, who knows. Either way, I won't take it on the freeway again.

Venting Problem?
by: Anonymous

So was it the usual venting problem of the CA model? What did the shop do?

Not yet....

I just took it back to the shop today...

It could've overheated, or it could've been too low on gas for that type of RPMs. I'll get back to you when I get the results.

My Bike Shows the Same Behavior

Did you find out what it was? My new bought bike showed the exact same behavior yesterday on my first highway trip.

Engine Stalling

I don't know what it is. But I would take it back to the mechanic and tell him what it does. That is not safe. I would rather spend more on it than to keep on like that.
