Encouraging My Wife

by John
(Canada)

Hey guys - I think your website is great. I want my wife to also do the learning thing and join me on trips, she is cautious but I know she'd be great----especially if I nudge her to check out this site.

How Sweet
by: Aili

John, how sweet and encouraging of you! My husband is like that too, always supportive of anything I want to do or try to do. I am the envy of many of my friends.

I was talking to a guy once about his Harley, and he said his wife got her license and had a Sportster, but she was terrified every time she rode. Could not relax and enjoy. I think the bike was just too big for her. When you two go bike shopping, make sure she picks out the bike, don't try to influence her, let her find what speaks to her.

PS: I actually had a motorcycle before my husband...had my license before him too (but only by a couple days).

Hi John!

You mentioned that your wife is a good car driver. That means she thinks clearly, and rationally. She'll make a great rider. IMO women tend to be less testosterone-driven in their driving habits than most young men. Please encourage her, she'll have a terrific time, make some fine friendships, and the sport needs more women drivers.

Thanks Cathy,

Yes Canada offers many learning options, my wife does ride with me and is great. She mentioned riding solo at some point and I got very excited at the possibility. I agree with you, re: her finding her own way to it, she is an excellent car driver, I know she would nail the bike thing in time. Looking at a site like this one is great for ladies on the cusp of a decision, nothing like finding out you are not the only one thinking about it. I know 2 lady bikers who have graduated from courses this year and they are doing fantastic.

Encouraging Wife
by: Cathy G

Hi John,

I learned a lot from people on this website- when I had questions, I posted here and got a lot of good responses. Women here are all about encouraging others by offering advice and sharing stories. What are your wife's biggest concerns? Does she ride on the back of your bike right now? A lot of women have gotten into riding bikes after being a passenger for many years- sometimes that is what it takes before someone reaches that comfort level to try riding on their own. Does Canada offer motorcycle safety courses? Maybe she could go through the course if one is available. If you think she'd be a good rider, then you are probably right. It's just a matter of convincing her, and that s something she'll have to achieve on her own. You know what they say: A person convinced against their will is a person unconvinced. :)

Cathy
