Dieing to Ride and Be Safe

I am 26 and have always been a passenger on a motorcycle. I am recently divorced. Wanting to find myself and get some freedom back, I thought what better way than to learn to ride. I CAN DO IT. What are the proper steps. I want it to become second nature so that i quickly out grow my small first bike. Which brings me to my second question. What kind of bike. I am thinking 250r....what maker will provide more bang for my buck? Can I go bigger? Thank You JPW3
