Cross-Country Ride

by Jus-Jus
(So. Cal)

Hey Ladies,

I'm starting to plan now for my first ever cross-country ride next May. I plan to take on most of it solo, picking up and dropping off a few friends along the way. I would 1) be grateful for any overall, general tips you could give me as a "young" lady out on her own and 2) if anyone has a very rough estimate of the cost of a coast to coast trip on a bike, it would be much appreciated.

I know there are a lot of variables that go into this. I'm looking at taking my time, at a minimum of 25 (stops for friends and such) days, moving from California to Virginia, in a zig-zag formation.

Thanks in advance!

Randomly Yours,

Jus

Keep your packing simple - rain gear is a must. Motorcycle insurance in case you break down. Should you get really hot, wear a wet bandanna on your head under your helmet, around your neck, and possibly even wet your shirt to. Drink lots of fluids so you don't get dehydrated with all the wind. Check with clubs on your route, they know the best mechanics if you need one, and can offer route support too. Lots of construction going on right now. And look over your ride with internet maps so you have some idea of what's in store. If you're riding high mountains, call a bike shop to see if they recommend any adjustments due to the lower oxygen level. And if you're on any medication, tell your Dr your plans in case they have advice - some medications react differently at altitude, scary on a bike! (ps I-70 west of Denver is cool, 36 is not to be missed! If you're going the lower route AZ has nice roads too!) Plan your gas stops too!
I'm jealous - be safe!

Don't know a whole lot. Just be sure and let someone know where you will be at all times. Pick a route and stay on that route. Be prepared for all types of weather. Wear sunscreen even if you think you don't need it. Carry a cell phone and stop to take breaks. Don't ride when you are exhausted.
