My New Suzuki Boulevard

Now that I'm 58 with osteoporosis, fine time to take up motorcycles, but I've got the bug bad. My cruiser and I commute to work every day, 35 miles round trip and don't have to pay the bridge toll during commute hours!!! Every little bit helps, but really, it's about taking on a new, exciting challenge and loving every second that I have faced my fears and become infatuated with bikes. Thank you world for another favor. I may never get to retire, but at least I can travel to work in style, with fun all along the way.

 Great to Hear About New Riders

I rode quite well 11 years ago but had to sell my bike and didn't get a chance to ride until last year. I bought a new Yamaha VStar 1100 last year and am riding again. I'm 44. It surprised me how much of my skill I had lost. It was almost like starting over. Turning sharply was especially difficult. After a year things are quite a bit better. I wish I had more women in my area to ride with. I ride with my husband and his group of very experienced riders so I am always trying to keep up :( Anyway, it sure is great to hear all of your encouraging stories and seeing your beautiful bikes!!!

 I Hear Ya!

I'm 48, I just got my first bike in Feb, a Sporster 883. It weights 500+ lbs.Turning is a challenge for me also. I only have about 400 miles on it. I have improved by leaps and bounds, but I still do not feel confident in turning. If I had to do a U Turn at a light, well, don't know if I could. Yesterday my hubby and I rode to his aunts, and instead of turning my bike around in a tight space to go back the way we came, I opted to go straight and take the long way (LOL, in my defense it also involved riding on gravel which freaks me out!). I have been going to parking lots to practice my moves. I got really good at stopping, I can weave, I can do big turns, shifting is getting better. I need to learn u turns and just plain working the friction zone. Keep up the good work, practice, practice. I got the video "Ride Like a Pro" and it really helped me a lot.

Learning to turn is one of the first challenges of beginning riding. Perhaps first it is important for you to realize that you do not turn with your arms. You turn by gently leaning and shifting weight to the handlebar (R or L) where you intend to turn. Practice wider turns without starting and stopping at first, in an empty parking lot. Yesterday got my own Suzuki Boulevard at age 54. Love it! At 117 lbs and a newbie, dumped 2x today learning to turn. Seeking girl advice to deal with weight of bike. Just found this site. Inspired to hear about your age and purchase.

I have the exact same model of bike. I love it. I had mentioned casually that I would like to ride my own bike and my hubby surprised me with it at our wedding. I just learned to ride last August and I'm loving every minute of it. Kudos to you for commuting. I'm still a little shy when it comes to Seattle rush hour traffic.

Isn't it wonderful to finally be free of fear! Wind in your face. Smells all around. Senses hyper-alert...nothing like it. Those that don't ride just don't understand.

I almost bought that exact same bike, but went with the Burgman 400. How do you like it?

I'm 61, first time motorcycle rider, and I love to hear about women who decided to take control of what they really love to do. I have just got my license after completing the basic riding course and it was very demanding and a real big deal for me.  Doing What You Love!

I think that is awesome. You are doing something that you love. We are only put on this earth for such a short time and I truly believe we should enjoy it why we are here. I just recently took a rider course and received my license and purchased a new bike 2 weeks ago. I have a lot of learning yet to do but I am sure I will enjoy doing it.

 To Heck with Osteoporosis

There's no reason osteoporosis should keep you from riding like the wind. I have an arthritic hip but I'm just as liable to break it tripping in my bedroom as I am riding my motorcycle. You go girl!!

I feel like your comments about osteoporosis are astonishing. My mother has osteoporosis and I sure wouldn't want her riding a motorcycle. Do you have anyone who cares about you? If you did, I'm certain they would tell you to get off the bike.

I'm impressed. That is the prettiest bike. You're brave & bold to get in commuter traffic with all the road rage. Maybe one day soon, especially with gas prices I'll grow some balls and get me a bike & join this club. I've always wanted a bike since my early 20's. Watch out for my picture.
