I let people take my bike around the parking lot but that's becuase my old bike was a rarity - it was an old Hondamatic and a lot of my Harley riding friends were curious but no one and I mean no one will ever ride my bike I have now. That is my bike - I have NEVER sat on anyone's bike without #1 knowing them and #2 asking permission. Let alone ride it.

For me anyway my bike is highly personal as a lot of peoples are and I would hate it for someone to damage my bike and I would feel worse if I damaged someone else's.

Insurance
by: Tracy

It would certainly depend upon your individual insurance policy and any special conditions.

Most policies allow for a "non listed rider / driver" but it usually carries with it an increased excess - for example my regular excess is $350, but if an unlisted rider has an accident it might cost me $1000 excess. You will need to check the fine print on your insurance. Most importantly however, regardless of whether the person is listed on your insurance or not, factors such as alcohol or being unlicensed will void your policy.

But like the others have said before me, it's well and good that they will say they will pay if they crash, but most people don't have the $$$ when it comes to the crunch - 'scuse the pun!

Not Even the Husband...
by: Anonymous

My husband has his motorcycle license but I am the only one with the motorcycle insurance. He won't ride it because he isn't insured.

If your friend doesn't have their license and insurance it could be YOU who pays the bill. I am not sure, but I am almost positive that your insurance would be void because the rider of the vehicle was not the insured one. Often policies are render void if you break with the policy in anyway. Meaning, if the policy was written with you as a rider, then your friend or spouse, whatever will not be covered. You could not only end up with a repair bill or a loan to pay off and no bike to show for it, AND there is a potential that your friend would sue you for their injuries, etc. In addition, if your friend wrecked your cycle into someone or something else, you could be liable for that since you are the owner and carrier of the insurance on that particular vehicle. But just guessing on this last part.

I actually have a friend who let another friend ride their bike (after drinking...stupidity) and it wrecked her bike badly (gladly and surprisingly he walked away). Guess who paid? My friend...alot. Don't do it.

Do yourself a favor and politely say no, you will be doing your friend and friendship a favor too.

Not Ever!
by: Jacee

I will let no one, ever, except my husband, ride my motorcycle. I don't care if they promise to pay if they wreck it. My bike suspension is set up perfectly for my height, my weight - not someone else's.

And if they do happen to wreck it, it takes my time and effort to get it fixed. I won't have it to ride while it's being fixed. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. It is not smart to let someone else ride your motorcycle - unless you don't care about it that much and your time is not valuable.

You Break It, You Bought It

That's right, if they wreck it, they have bought themselves a motorcycle. Ha? I don't understand that part. You wont think it quite so funny if they do wreck it, and you're out a bike and then suddenly they remember what other bills they have to pay. I don't let anyone who's not on my insurance policy ride my bike.

Don't Be Foolish

If you do not know what your driving coverage is for your bike, or your car for that matter, you better make that call asap. You could or not, be responsible and be in a world of trouble. Call your agent now!
