Clutching/Braking

by Marsha Raley
(Tennessee)

When taking off from a hill, I have all kinds of issues. First, I can not feel when my clutch engages, second - I can not hold the front brake and control the throttle, Third - When I use my foot brake only, I dont seem to let off of it slowly because of not feeling the clutch and the bike "dies".

I have dropped my bike twice (in one evening) practicing this... HELP!!!!

I am either going to have to just stop riding and sell the bike or just stay away from hills.

Thanks,

Marsha in Tennessee

Clutching on Hill
by: Anonymous

I have small hands and can't control the clutch and hand braking either. So.. brake with the FOOT brake, this leaves your r hand free, ease on the throttle as you release the foot brake, this is also easier on the clutch on a hill. It takes some practice but works for me.

What kind of bike are you learning on? I have had my own problems with the hills and found that using the front brake and the clutch are very helpful mustlty the clutch. Find the friction zone where the bike wants to pull forward with the hill. Just let it guide you. You'll do fine. Don't give up. If worse comes to worse get a smaller bike.

Taking Off

Are you wearing gloves? Although a good protective item they tend to keep you from feeling the first signs of clutch engagement. You may want to consider not wearing them if this is the case. Also, front brake can be controlled quite well with just the finger tips. That way you can begin turning throttle when letting out clutch while still applying front brake pressure. As for dropping the bike...hmmmmm. Keep your feet down til you know you have positive acceleration balance control. It will all come together...don't quit now !!!!
