Checking the Engine Oil

by Rip

I would like to know the correct way to check the engine oil on my 2001 Harley Davidson Fatboy. So far I have had two different people tell me two different ways. Anyway, should it be on the kick stand or straight up?

Is what the manual tells you. I think that is for safety reasons. If you are checking alone, it is hard to hold your bike up and check the oil. But I found after a service, my oil seemed very low when on the side. I called several dealers to find out what they thought and they all said they check it on the side (I have a Sportster), however, I added some extra oil while I had it standing up (with my hubby holding it), If you overfill it, it will come out the something or other, but I only added a bit.

Check with your dealer, and a few more service depts.
