Care

My rubber handgrips are getting ugly, I've been told it's from the oils in my hands. Is there anything to prevent this other than gloves?

WOW - Lynn et al

I really did not expect so many to agree w/that statement! I would say out of 40 riders in a poker run I am probably the ONLY one with the gloves on!!

As a younger pillion rider, I was known to jump on with no helmet, shorts and sandals and halter top - but I am older and wiser and survived many a young and foolish decision without a scratch.

I live in a state where there is no law requiring a helmet - AND I PREFER IT THAT WAY!! I firmly believe in the right to decide my level of safety in any given situation and believe being "forced" to comply w/safety rules is intrusive and unnecessary.

Yet I am old enough to know when I'm making a bad choice or taking unnecessary risks. I meant no disrespect of others' freedom to choose...just being a perpetual mom. Now, grab an umbrella...and a sweater! - it's supposed to rain today! :)

I didn't think you were asking anyone's opinion about wearing gloves! I wear them, but it is no one's business if you don't, unless you are a minor.

I don't think you will be able to avoid future discoloration of your grips if you choose to ride w/o gloves. We have oils in our skin and that is that.

Type Bike

What type bike do you have? Is this a dirt bike, street bike, or dual sport maybe? I've known a lot of kids that would ride dirt bikes around the farm at low speeds with no gloves, but even that can be risky. I agree with the other ladies that gloves are a necessary safety feature. Gloves can enhance your cool factor too, if you select the right ones. You can get perforated ones or ones with a mesh panel to let air flow through. I don't know of much you can do to make the grips look nicer, but you might ask at a bike shop or automotive store. I seem to remember a product for restoring rubber car bumpers to their former luster. Hope this helps. Ride safe.

Gloves

Are you brain dead? If you hit the pavement it is going to be painful. So why would you not want to protect as much skin as you can?

ATGATT

Well...gloves ARE part of the standard gear that should be worn all the time...All The Gear All The Time...because we don't really get to decide exactly when we will be abruptly separated from our ride. You know you are going to use your hands to try to break a fall, and at even 20 mph, that's a whole lot of skin you will forfeit.

But other than donning gloves...to protect your bike's finish...you could always replace your grips w/chrome or something. Of course, then you will need to shine them all the time.

Perhaps there is a spray that can be applied to the grips to give them a layer of protection from your skin's oils, even Armorall may be effective. Just try to test it in a small area first, before slathering it all over and finding it does worse than your natural oils.

Seriously, have you seen someone's hands after a hard fall, even on the playground? Stones embedded and all? And your skin around the bony areas (knuckles) is REALLY thin...

Sorry; just showing my age...

Ride safe!
