Braking On a Steep Hill

by Michelle Grant
(Victoria, B.C. Canada)

Hi,

I have tried to find information about braking on steep hills on a motorcycle and to no avail. How is this done? I always freak out when approaching the hills. Can somebody please answer in detail?

Thanks!

Michelle

One Foot Method
by: Lin

I agree with the poster about keeping your right foot on the brake and your left foot on the ground. That way you aren't having to depend on the hand brake when you release the clutch cause you'll need more throttle than usual. But one thing I would add, I would practice keeping that one foot method at regular stop lights too as much as you can. I found myself on a hill during one of my first rides and I had a hard time balancing on one foot because I wasn't used to it. After a few minutes of rolling back and braking, I finally got the bike moving but my heart was pounding by that time. Good luck. Hope this helped.

A Few Hints
by: WWF

When stopping, my husband taught me to put my left foot down for balance and keep my right foot on the brake. This helps on a hill because you can keep your foot on the brake, then ease up on the brake as you work with the clutch and throttle with your hands. It also helps to breathe and smile, imho!

Lol, yeah yell for some help ! That's what I did a few weeks ago when I stalled it on a steep hill going up.

Seriously - I just avoid things like that for a little while til I get used to everything else - I didn't have a problem with it on my old automatic but not quite there yet with my new clutch one.
