Bike Suddenly Turns Off

by Jesse
(Pomona, CA)

One night as I'm riding my lights began to turn on and off on me as I'm riding in the night. About a week later in the morning I was riding to work on the freeway and my bike just turns off on me. 15 minutes later it turns back on, so I continue to ride then it turns off on me again like 10 minutes later. The whole power, not just the engine, it all shuts off. What can be the cause of this more or less help me narrow it down before I take it to a motorcycle shop and get screwed over something that it is not. I have checked the battery and its 12v. A friend of mine said it might be the stater kit or something like that and it can be pricey... I would appreciate any help.....ohh.. it's an older bike 99' suzuki gsxr600.

Bike Shutting Off
by: Laura

I had the same problem after I had my bike lowered. I took it to a different shop and they told me that when the mechanic put the seat back on the fuel line was not in the right place and was getting pinched. So of course every time I moved a little on the seat, the bike shut off. Not sure if this helps you or not.

I commented earlier, but my bf just got a Ducati, and he was having similar problems. We were on a ride when smoke started pouring out from the resistor located at the front of the engine, it got so hot it melted the wires going into it. He had problems with getting the bike to start and the battery went flat easily, he put in a new battery, but it went flat really fast. The resistor is what send the current back into your battery to make sure it will charge. It seems that the resistor was faulty, so he put in a new one, but it also seems to have shorted out the starter and maybe the alternator.

Don't know if this will help, but I thought I'd tell you about it anyway.

Good luck.

Could be......

I had almost the same problem with my bike. Turned out to be a loose battery cable. If it isn't something as simple as that, then take it to someone who can wrench.

Hi, Don't take this wrong, but it sounds like you aren't mechanically minded, so you will definitely be better off taking it to a shop. It could be a number of things. Have you checked all the connections to your battery? There is definitely something amiss with wiring if the lights went on and off. Electrics are tricky and time consuming. If the lights hadn't gone, I would have suggested fuel. Check that all of the fuses are in properly as well. As it has a digital/transistorized ignition, it could be loose wiring in there as well.

Good luck....

Sounds Like Electrical

My fatboy started doing the same thing after the hubby had installed a new kuryakin tailight. I told him to put my stock light back on and it cleared up for awhile, then it started again and it was the ignition switch. Good luck on finding your problem.
