Bike Sitting Idle?

Ok here goes and I hope I ask this the right way. Can a motorcycle sit in a garage with out the battery in it and not have anything, ie gas etc make it go bad and hurt the bike? Or does it have to have the battery in it at all times or put battery in it periodically to start.

I sure hope this makes sense.

Thanks a bunch ;-)

bike storage
by: Barb

Hi,

I guess it would depend on the length of the storage. It is better to have a battery out of a bike and sitting on a bench (with a battery tender or trickle charger), and to have a drained gas tank if you intend to store it over the winter. Gas tends to evaporate and leave varnish behind, clogging jets and gas-taps.

If you don't remove the battery, at least disconnect the ground wire so that there is no drain on the battery when it isn't in use. If you decide to remove the battery, do NOT store it on concrete--I'm not certain why, but this hurts batteries. (Anyone know that reason? I read it somewhere..)

The best solution has been mentioned: periodic running, even for just long enough to get her warmed up and the oil well circulated. Also, now and then check the tire pressure, and keep it at the suggested psi.

When you begin to ride again, be sure to check all your lights, brakes and cables, and lube whatever might need it (brakes, clutch, throttle, whatever).

And enjoy the rides!!

We keep ours in the garage with the batteries and gas, etc. We too start ours up every few weeks and let them run for a few minutes.

Wintering Motorcycles

We keep our bikes in the garage for the winter, with the battery and the gas in the bike. That said, however, we have a battery tender and rotate it every few days between our 3 bikes. We also fill the gas tanks and add fuel stabilizer to each tank (just a few tablespoons, I think, depending on the size of the tank).

My husband also runs them once a month - either just in the driveway or he rides them around the neighborhood if the streets are dry. This keeps all the parts lubricated and any condensation out of the gas tank.
