Hi,

I have been riding as a passenger for over a year and have decided I want to learn to ride on my own. I was wondering what sort of bike is best for a beginner? I'm quite small framed and not tall (5'5) so am looking for a light road bike that will last me a long time. I'm happy to spend money on a good bike that will last.

I was also wondering which brands you recommend for gear and what I should look for if buying second hand gear. Is it worth looking for a second hand helmet or should that be something always bought new?

There are a few accredited courses near where I live so i am looking at attending one of those to get some skills.

Any advice you can give on just generally starting out would be greatly appreciated.

I am 5'5' as well. My bike is a Honda Shadow 600 VLX. It fits perfectly. As for the helmet, I would buy a new one. It is protecting the most important part of you, I would spend a little extra and make a good investment on that.

Welcome to the world of riding. I am also new just completed my second ride around countryside today. I would definitely recommend the classes it was a lot of fun and very helpful. They are a must.

You might want to wait til you take the class to get idea of what type bike you want and go to dealers and sit on a lot of different bikes.

The best advice I can give you on gear is get the best you can afford. Even more important than being able to afford the bike. I wiped out my first trip on gravel and sure was glad I had on good gear not a scratch to me. Used is probably okay but I would get a new helmet. You never know how person treated it and your head is not a place to save money. Others with more experience can help you along.
