Battery Tender

(Nevada)

I am a new owner of a Honda Rebel 250, and have VERY limited mechanical knowledge. My battery is dead. I bought a Battery Tender JR, and have read the directions, but I am confused about why I have rings and alligator clips, and how to actually hook it up safely. Please help!

Had Exact Same Prob!

Hey,

I feel your pain! I too have a Honda Rebel 250 with very little bike knowledge HOWEVER back in February, my bike would not start due to inactivity. I bought a tender, followed the directions and it was brought back to life.

Here's what you do; take out the battery- hook the black clips (they look like butterfly ponytail holders) to the black (positive) charge on your bike. Then do the red to red. Now plug in in the outlet and that's it. When your battery is charged, the light will come on from the tender/charger. If your battery is DEAD, then after about 48 hours, you will not see any light. Naturally then you know you will need to purchase a new battery. If you are unsure, just check with your local bike shop. Good luck and you will be fine!!!

Get a New Battery
by: Toolie

If your battery is dead, no amount of "tenderising" will bring it back to life. The best thing to do would be to contact your local dealer and find out how to remove the battery. Then take the battery down to either your dealer or some place like Sears to have it checked or simply to buy a new one.

The battery tender is to keep charged batteries charged, but once they're dead, the only way to get your bike going is to possibly jump start (i.e. have someone give you a push and pop the clutch) - depending on how far gone the battery truly is.

Good luck!

Do you have a manual for your bike ? Have you taken the colored screws off the top of the battery to check to see the fluid level? The dealer is a good resource. Red is positive, and black is your ground , you can attach the black one to any part of your metal frame for ground. Attach the red clip to the red or + post at one end of your battery. Hope this is helpful. Like to see other woman who try to learn how to wrench they're own bikes, cudos. Ciao

Whenever I have questions like yours, I call my local motorcycle dealer. They always seem helpful.
