Bad Back, Which Bike to Ride

by Leenie
(Northbay, Ontario, Canada)

I have a bad back and I am looking into purchasing my first bike. I want to know if it's better to lean forward on a sporty/racer or sit up with a cruiser/touring. Keep in mind I travel a lot.

Best Bike for Your Back

Hello Ontario! So you have a bad back, I used to have back problems, too (hopefully not anymore) Went to a chiropractor and after a month of adjustments and some easy to do back exercises I am trouble free, just go for a monthly adjustment now. SO, when I started riding I was a bit concerned about this too! I would advise you NOT to get a cruiser, as your feet are positioned forward and you are therefore unable to lift yourself up off the seat with your pegs when going over a bump, etc. On a cruiser all the bumps go straight up into your back-not good! The bike I ride is a Ninja 500, I find the position is excellent for me, at first I thought I would be leaning forward too much but the force of the wind pushes you up a bit into a very comfy position! And face it, when riding you need to get off a stretch every so often, that's the nature of the sport, and a good idea for everyone! Good luck with your choice and take care of that back, happy trails!
