A Breath Of Fresh Air

by Over 50 & Lovin' Life
(Maine)

I am 51 yrs old and have always wanted to ride my own motorcycle. Recent events led me to put a down payment on a 2004 Softail Standard, customized for a woman my size...love at first site! Then thought I'd better learn to ride. Now I'm scared and wondering if I'm out of my mind - don't even dare to tell my kids. A google search led me to this site and I'm regaining confidence from reading all the posts - lots from new riders over 50! Thanks everyone, I'll keep checking back here for support and assurance I'm not going crazy!

A Breath Of Fresh Air
by: Marion

I just turned 53 this year. We are in our prime. Kids are grown; it is our time to play. We bought a toy hauler since we love to camp; this way we can take the bikes with us or the 4-wheelers; whatever mood we are in. So see, you are not crazy, but having fun. Enjoy and be safe. Don't forget your safety equipment.

Have Fun
by: Joan

I will turn 50 in September and just finished the motorcycle safety course. Was I scared - yes but what a wonderful feeling of accomplishment when I finished and passed. As many have said - take a deep breath and enjoy it.

58 and Loving It!
by: Anonymous

I just learned to ride last fall and got my license in the first class after the snow was gone. Take a deep breath, remember to breathe and talk to yourself and you can do it.

Great Choice!
by: Robin C

You are NOT crazy, you are in the best time of your life and able to start enjoying it more and more! That's how I feel about it, although I do endure lots of "mid life crisis" jokes from my kids! My parents were terrified at first...now my Dad brags about me lol! I'm in my second full year of riding, and am loving it. Previously I had only ridden on the back of my husbands bike, and I just didn't want to have to rely on him to be home to go for a ride. I went out and bought a bike and signed up for a class...then I told him what I had done at the same time I showed him my new bike! He was shocked at first, but has been really supportive. Once someone who loves you sees how excited and happy this makes you, you will find that they are happy for you too. Enjoy learning a new skill, and doing something that you've always wanted. Best of luck to you :)

Get Your Wind Therapy!
by: Sassy2731

No you are not crazy! I went and took the BRC when I was 46. My 2 sons thought it was cool, so they went and learned to ride also. Now we all go riding together. Their friends think it is cool also. But again, I used to ride BMX with them and gained their friends as the coolest Mom. I've been riding for 6 years now and love it. I rode with my husband for over 30 years, but I love to ride my own. It is such a different ride than just being a passenger. Besides you are a grown woman aren't you! What says we can't do really cool stuff or fun stuff? Do men only have that privilege in life? I say NOT!

You're NOT Crazy!
by: Sassy2731

Trust me you are not crazy! It is the perfect time for you! I am having the time of my life riding and I have no worries about children at home either. This makes my wind therapy much nicer. I say GO FOR IT! Get in the WIND!

Just like me!
by: idahokathy

2 years ago, on my 50th birthday, I bought my Suzuki C50. Started in parking lots for a couple of days, then neighborhood streets. My husband and I rode all summer, then took the Motorcycle Safety Course that September. This year, in March, we went to the motorcycle show and I fell in love with a 2011 Honda Interstate VT1300. The 800 was a great bike to learn on and the VT1300 is a perfect fit for me now. I learned a lot in the MSF. Take your time, don't get stressed out and make it fun!! If I can do it - so can you!!

Crazy, no way. I am 53 and have 4 grandchildren and have had my license for just a little over a year now. Did not know what I was missing. Just apply what learned in class and wear ALL safety equipment. Start out on side roads in your neighborhood and progress onto busier streets. Challenge yourself with that. A lady on this site told me about chewing gum; I did this and it works; don't know how but it does. Good luck and be safe.

Just ride!
by: Janine

I learned to ride in Sept of 07. I had never ridden before except as a passenger. Took the Rider's Edge course at Central ME HD and had a blast. Got my bike in Oct and rode up until Thanksgiving, as it was just to darn cold to ride anymore. The next season I went to Sturgis! The only problem I had was I dropped my bike on Main St. It was the first time for me (dropping the bike) and it wasn't as embarrassing as I would have thought. I had five or six guys rush to my aid, which made me feel pretty good, as I am also of middle age.

Don't worry about what others may think of you. If you enjoy riding, then ride. Life is just to short. Get out there and enjoy!

Over 50...
by: Sandra

You haven't lost your mind; you've FOUND your sanity!!

I will be 50 soon enough. Got my license last spring and had already purchased my Suzuki C50 (800 cc bike) Boulevard before I completed the MSF Basic Rider Course and got licensed with my husband...

Now he can't stop dreaming of the day I will sell my bike, and I can't stop dreaming of the day we take a biker vacation to Yellowstone or the West Coast! LOL

Not sure we will ever be on the same page, but I enjoy what I can, when I can...I'd rather live my life vigorously now than have regrets when I'm too old or feeble to change any of it.

Enjoy yourself, relax, breathe deeply...and KEEP YOUR CHIN UP! (It will keep your bike steadier!)
