250cc? 600cc? Cruiser? Sport? Scooter?? So many options!

by Kitta

When I took the MSF course, it was my very first time sitting on anything with 2 wheels and a motor. I think I picked it up pretty quickly, and even had some of the veteran Harley guys saying that I was really impressive for a beginner. My mom encouraged me to take the course by saying that, if I passed, I could borrow her 150 Genuine Buddy scooter for the summer. I passed the course a few weeks ago, and went on a 50 mile mountain ride on the Buddy with my mom for Mother's Day.

As much as my mom is against it, I can't shake the feeling that I want to buy a motorcycle instead. The Buddy was fun, but I was riding full throttle at 65. That was fun for my first ride, but I get the feeling I'll be bored and too restricted after a while.

My question is: what in the world should I buy for my first bike?? I was originally drawn to cruiser-style motorcycles, but after riding both a cruiser and a dual-sport in the MSF course, I found that I felt more comfortable on the dual-sport. I am 5'8" and 120 lbs, and I want a bike that I can handle but also grow into. Not too heavy, not too fast, not too slow. I've heard tons of people suggest going small (Ninja 250 seems to be the almost unanimous recommendation), but then others say 600cc is still manageable for beginners. Suggestions? Tips? Advice?

650cc or 800cc
by: Wanda

Congratulations. Sounds like you were born to ride. If you've already been riding at 65 mph, you will not be happy on a 250cc. My first and only bike is a dual sport, a BMW G650GS, and I love it. You might also consider one of the 798cc BMW dual sports. They are awesome bikes. Another good make of bike is Triumph. The Triumph Tiger is a good dual sport. The Triumph Scrambler is also a lot of bike for the money. You might even check out the Triumph Bonneville if you decide to go with a street bike only. Let's see, one more is the BMW F800ST sport touring motorcycle; it is a nice ride. Good luck choosing! Enjoy the ride.

I'm a cruiser!

Bought my Suzuki Boulevard C50 (800 cc) before I ever took the course! And it is a perfect fit for me...but then I am an admitted "cruiser girl".

How does the song go? My mamma told me, you better shop around! LOL Enjoy your hunt - it's a very personal call, but the more you sit on, the more you get a feel for what feels right for you.

Ninja

Kawasaki also made a Ninja 500. I would recommend a 500 over the 250. I know I got bored with my 250 pretty fast and I bought the 500. I ride it around town and also did a 4 day trip on it. I think it's just a great all around bike. I don't have any problems getting on the highway with it, it has plenty of power for merging in traffic.
