2009 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom

by Mike Martin

It's funny listening to a guy give a woman advise on what to ride or not ride. I am actually surprised not to see woman selling bikes. Okay you've figured out that I am not a woman but I felt compelled to write anyway. After riding BMW bikes as a motor officer for ten years, I finally purchased a Harley Davidson for my 50th birthday. I am single and run into a lot of women on Vulcan 500's who always want to sit on my Sportster and try it out. I don't mind but I just have to laugh when I hear some Big Beer Bellied biker start saying why a woman needs a Road King or some other hugh model Harley bike. Ladies, go pick your own bike! Don't let one of the men talk you in to something just because it looks good. It has to be comfortable and you are the one who lives with the bike you ride. I can't stress how important it is to be comfortable. So you may ask why a 5' 9" 200 pound man rides a 1200 Sportster? Because I don't want anyone riding with me. I want to see you on your own bike and admire you for the independent riding woman that you are and not what someone says you have to be. Happy Riding!

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE
by: Cheryl

I had several ppl (men) tell me that I wouldn't want a Sporty, that I would out grow it, etc...
And someday that may be true, but for now, I love her and I feel so comfortable and confident on my girl....I sat on tons of bikes before I picked one out and I knew the minute I sat on her, she was the one :) I plan to have many happy years with my Sporty !!!

Thanks!

Very inspiring Mike! Thanks! Always fun to hear a guy's viewpoint! I got my license 3 summers ago, and I'm still riding a Rebel - but it works for me. I'm 60 and 5'1" and lovin' it! Interesting thing my husband said the other day (something I'd never heard him say before)... He's glad I'm riding my own bike now because he never was totally comfortable having me riding with him. He wasn't uncomfortable physically - he's been riding for 40 years - but it was the safety factor thing! Better odds if we're each on our own bike I guess!

Ride safe everyone!

m/c choice

Mike, it's so nice to know that you are open minded about female riders! I've been riding for 23 yrs and it started with the MSF course one weekend and going the next day to purchase my first m/c. A GoldWing. I didn't get any flack when I said what I wanted and which one I wanted. Through the years there have been guys say stuff that wasn't so nice and some of them surely came out of the cave to say those ugly things. All of the folks around me, when I was learning to ride, were supportive and encouraging which was a plus. When folks keep on talking about that "big bike" and you're a girl I have two things I tell them: Well my legs reach the ground and nobody ever told me I couldn't ride it. My BF feels like you..that the girl needs to be on her own ride. When/if I do ask to two up with him I get the 20 questions..are you sick? Is your bike broken? and on and on.
Thanks for encouraging the ladies to ride their own.
I have only seen two female salesladies but have not done business with them so don't know if they have more female customers than male ones.
Have a safe ride!
