I have a brand new 09 Kawasaki Ninja 250...its been working great then today when i went to ride it with my girl, it started like a champ like normal but when I put it into 1st gear, the whole bike died...i had the clutch in and everything so i don't know what the problem could be. Do you know what could be wrong??

Another Possibility
by: Rene L.

Hi,

My bike is not a sportbike so I don't know if the problem would be similar but I have a new 2009 Suzuki S-40 that I bought in Feb. Twice I have had problems with the bike not starting as a result of a cable that had somehow come loose under the seat. The last time was just last week. I had been out riding with no problem and while I was riding the bike sputtered, I stopped to make sure I was not running out of gas and when I tried to get going again I would not start at all. After confirming it was not the battery had it towed back to the dealer to find it was again a cable that came loose. Bummer, but the good news it that it was an easy and quick fix. Might be something to look into if it just won't start and you are sure your battery is fine.

I guess I never think about having to warm my bike up since I start it and take off. My HD friends all let their warm up a bit, but I don't.

Both are Valid Possibilities

The sidestand safety switch is a likely culprit, as is whether the bike is warmed up enough. The pilot jets in the Ninja 250 carbs are tiny, for emissions compliance, and although there are changes on the '08 and newer bikes, it's likely the jetting is very similar, and on the '07 and earlier models it would take AT LEAST 5 minutes of idling to be warmed up enough to not die.

I know this is a stupid question but did you have the kickstand up yet?

My Yamaha has a safety feature where I can't put it into gear if the kickstand is down. Took me a few minutes and a panicked call to the guy that sold me the bike before I had my DUH moment.

Maybe just wasn't warmed up enough?
